DISCUSSION

Do you ever struggle to come up with examples of a word in context? Instead of racking your brain, consider using the English-Corpora COCA. This platform can be a valuable resource for language learners and teachers alike. Here’s how you can get started:

1. Follow the link to the English-Corpora COCA and create an account by clicking “My account” and filling in the form. If you don’t have a university or college email address, just register as a “Non-researcher.” You’ll still have 50 queries each day (which should be more than enough!).

2. Once you’ve registered, you can start using the corpus to suit your needs. Choose the corpus that interests you (or any), then choose “Word” and click “See detailed info for word.” The platform will provide you with information on the definition of the word, its collocations, synonyms, and more.

3. The “LIST” section allows you to search for examples of sentences from different sources, which can be a great way to see a word used in context.

I encourage you to try out this service and think about how you might use it to create different activities for your online course or in-class activities. Share your ideas and work in the channel and here on Canvas.
